Craigconnects by Craig

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark has started a new site – Craigconnects. This site shall help promote non-profit organizations which are known to be doing a great work in their domain. After spending more than 10 years on Craigslist, this is a change which Craig is very excited about.

Craigconnects would not be providing any direct funding to the non-profit organizations but would help promote their cause and request users to donate online. Seven primary areas of focus for Craigconnects would be: Community building, journalism, the Middle East, open and accountable government, service and volunteering, technology for social good, and veterans issues.

As per Craig, this is a long term initiative and he plans to dedicate next 20 years of his life to this cause. You can read more about this startup by clicking here.

Facebook Movie Streaming

Movie streaming has finally come to Facebook! Warner Bros has teamed up with Facebook to offer movie rentals through Facebook. Users can now rent movies using Facebook credits. It would require 30 Facebook credits or $3 to watch a movie. Once rented, a user can watch the movie anytime within 48 hours.

Warner Bros believes that since millions of people regularly visit Facebook, this might be a good way to promote it’s movie rental business. This puts Facebook squarely in competition to other movie rental service like Netflix and life streaming service like Hulu.

After the news spread that Warner Bros has released ‘Dark Knight’ on Facebook, shares of Netflix dipped. This could herald a new age of live movie streaming and movie rentals. Many more studios are expected to join this initiative and with the ever growing user base of Facebook, this could be a game changer.

Khaled Mohamed Saeed

The death of Khaled Mohamed Saeed has been a focal point of the Egyptian revolution which ended 30 years of rule by Hosni Mubarak. Never before has the middle east been rocked by such a mass uprising inspired by the death of an individual. The death of Khaled Mohamed Saeed inspired Wael Ghonim to start a Facebook page titled “We all are Khalid Said”. This Facebook page served as a platform to galvanize support for the cause of freedom.

Thousands of people pledged support for the cause and took to streets demanding a change in rule and establishment of democracy. The whole world watched as the ‘Facebook Generation’ forced a change with very little bloodshed. Egypt as a nation has a vital Geo-Political impact on the Western World. It’s strong ties with US and Israel meant that both countries were in a very tight spot.

The biggest impact of the Egyptian revolution has been the fact that now people of the arab world are hoping that they too could have a shot at democracy if they come together. This has led to an uprising in Libiya and yemen. Both countries with large oil reserves and a potential to impact world economy on a big scale. Only the coming months will tell us the true impact of the Egyptian revolution but the start does seem promising.
